Apple Chutney - Devi's

Save Ki Chutney

This easy recipe comes from my friend Devi. It is easy to make and quite tasty. Once made, store in a fridge, where it will last for at least a couple of months. Makes a n average jam jar full.


  • 2 cooking apples( not eating apples)

  • 1 tbsp. Cooking oil

  • A 2-3 inch piece of cassia/cinnamon bark

  • 3-4 whole cloves

  • 1 tbsp. salt, adjust to taste

  • 2 tbsp. sugar, adjust to taste

  • 1 tsp. chilli powder, adjust to taste


  1. Wash, peel and coarsely grate apples. They should not be grated fine, otherwise you will end up with a mush!

  2. As you grate apples, keep putting them in a bowl in layers, sprinkling salt on each layer.

  3. Heat oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds, cinnamon and cloves.

  4. As soon as cumin seeds crackle, add the grated apple and cook for a few minutes, stirring gently a few tomes.

  5. Add and stir in sugar. Turn heat o

  6. Taste and adjust seasoning and sugar.

  7. when cool, add and mix chilli powder.

  8. Store in jars in a fridge. This chutney is not suitable for keeping in a cupboard.
