Those of you that have a plum tree in their garden, often have surplus plumss, too many even after sharing with friends and family. Once in a while, the plums that you buy are too sour or tart to eat as fruit. Use them to make this delicious, chutney like, bhaji/curry. It is great with parathas or rice Pulao (Pilaf). You can serve it as a chutney too.

Amounts are approximate and should be adjusted to tartness of the plums and your taste. You can make this dish using other tart/sour fruits too.

Ingredients

  • 6-8 sour plums

  • 1 tbsp. oil

  • 1 tsp. nigella seeds (kalaunji)

  • 1-2 pieces dry, red chillies

  • 1 hand of curry leaves

  • 1 tsp. grated ginger root

  • 4-5 chopped fresh chillies, adjusted to taste. In the picture here, I have used a mix of red and green, because I had just picked them from the garden.

  • 1/2 tsp. turmeric powder

  • Salt to taste

  • 1 tbsp. Jaggery or brown sugar, adjust to taste and tartness of plums. The dish should be sweet and sour, almost like a chutney.

  • Optional: 1 tbsp. chopped coriander leaves

Instructions

  1. Remove stones from the plums and chop.

  2. Heat oil in a pan. Add nigella seeds. As soon as they crackle, add curry leaves, ginger, dry red chillies.

  3. Add plum and chillies and then turmeric and salt. Stir to mix.

  4. Cook until soft, then add grated jaggery or brown sugar. Stir.

  5. Continue to cook until it is quite mashed up and dark in colour.

  6. Serve hot or cold.
