Spicy Carrot and Apple Salad

Gajar aur Sev ka Chatpata Salad

Grated carrots are used in all kinds of salads. Here I have mixed them with grated dessert apples. If you use cooking apples, omit lemon juice, they are tart enough. Quantities of carrots and apples are approximate. Serves 4-6


  • 3-4 carrots

  • 2 dessert apple

  • Salt to taste

  • 1 tsp roasted cumin, coarsely ground

  • 1/2 tsp. chilli flakes or thinly sliced green chillies

  • Juice of 1 lemon


  1. Top and tail and peel carrots.

  2. Slice and core apples, no need to peel. Sprinkle a little salt on apples immediately, this will stop discolouration.

  3. Grate both through same sized grater.

  4. Place in a bowl, add cumin, salt, chillies and mix gently.

  5. Taste and add lemon juice.

  6. Adjust seasoning. Keep in a bowl with cling film or an airtight container.

  7. Serve chilled.


  • You can add a teaspoon full of finely chopped coriander leaves, if you wish.

  • You can add Chat Masala in place of salt, chilli and roast cumin.
