Toasts are eaten all over the world, mostly with butter and jam or Marmite. Here is a collection of ideas to make a breakfast, tasty snacks and even a full meal. It is better to toast the bread first, gives much better results. Most of these toppings can be used as sandwich filling also.
Toast is like a vessel, an ideal bread to serve so many food of your choice, savoury, sweet, hot or cold.

Ingredients
Bread slices - use any good bread, fresher the better, like a white or whole wheat or rye or ciabatta or pitta bread, naan etc.

Cheese on toast ideas:
Blue cheese (any good variety) on fresh toast, grilled to melting lusciousness!
Cheddar Cheese and Branston Pickle (or other similar pickles) on toast-Steve Lister
Cheddar cheese and Mushroom; freshly toasted bread slices, with thinly sliced mushrooms and cheese on top and then grilled until cheese melts.
Cheese and onion: Slice some onions, drizzle with olive oil, mix and keep aside. Toast bread slices under the grill. When one side of bread slices is browned, turn the bread slices over. Place onion slices evenly on the white side of bread. Put cheese on top and grill. When cheese is soft and slightly browned, you have a gorgeous 'cheese and onion toast'... very tasty-Sativum.
Cheese and Worcester sauce (Welsh Rarebit); a popular English snack. Top a toast with chopped/grated/sliced cheddar cheese, sprinkle a few drops of Worcester sauce on top and then grill until it bubbles. Serve with tomato ketchup or some chutney. Mature cheddar cheese is best.
Cheese, onion and tomatoes; thin slices of tomatoes and onions on freshly made toast, topped with Camembert or Brie cheese or any other cheese of toast, then grilled.
Cheese: any good cheese, spread evenly on toast, then grilled until cheese melts. You can use many different cheeses, like cheddar, feta (Steve Lister), Gruyere, parmesan, Stilton etc.
Chilli jam and cheese: A thin layer of chilli jam on toast, topped with cheese of choice and grilled.
Cottage Cheese and Branston pickle, mixed up on a freshly made toast of choice.
Feta cheese and spinach; fresh spinach leaves, cooked, drained and mixed with feta cheese, freshly ground black pepper and salt to taste, spread on toast and then grilled.
Cream Cheese, sun-dried tomatoes and sliced red onions.

Chicken
Chicken and mayonnaise: Cooked cold chicken, shredded and mixed with mayonnaise, salt and freshly ground pepper, placed on a hot, buttered toast.
Chicken in cream sauce (tinned) heated and spooned onto a hot buttered toast.
Cold, cooked Chicken mixed with cranberry sauce, on a hot buttered toast.
Fruits:
Apple Sauce mixed with cinnamon and a little suga,r on freshly toasted bread.
Banana sliced lengthways to fit the toast.
Freshly sliced peaches or nectarines or mangoes or other fruits of choice, spread on a hot, buttered toast.
Sliced strawberries on a hot buttered toast.
Eggs
Fried egg and bacon on a hot, buttered toast, served with tomato ketchup.
Fried egg on a buttered toast, with a sprinkling of salt and pepper. Tomato sauce goes well with this one.
Fried egg on a cheese toast.
Omelette on toast.
Scrambled egg and beans on toast-Steve Lister
Scrambled egg, plain or with chopped onions, green chillies and coriander leaves, spread on a hot, buttered toast.
Egg and meat
Bacon, egg & grilled cherry tomatoes on toast-Steve Lister.

Meat and other things
Beef burgers on toast, topped with cheese and grilled (cook beef burgers to your liking first). Serve with tomato ketchup.
Beef Drippings on toast; a typically British topping from world war years.

Ham and Cheese on toast: Place a slice of ham on toast, top with cheese and grill. You can also add a few rings of onions, chopped green chillies and tomatoes, all under the cheese.
Ham and Pineapple; place a slice of ham on a toast, top with a slice of pineapple and then cover with cheese of choice. Grill until cheese melts.
Ham, Cheese and Mushroom; slices of ham, thinly sliced mushrooms and lastly Cheddar cheese on a fresh toast and then grilled until cheese melts.
Ham: Parma or other good ham on a hot, buttered toast. Can be topped with a good cheese and grilled.
Heinz toast toppers in jars/tins, heated and spooned over freshly made toast.
Hot Dog, sliced and placed on a buttered toast and served with tomato ketchup.
Inverted Pizza toasts with cheese, chorizo sausage and ham slices, topped with basil leaves-Steve Lister
Keema on toast.
Mince beef on toast-Steve Lister.
Nduja (a spicy pork paste from Calabria): A thin layer of Nduja, then cheese and then grilled-Kavita Favelle.
Pancetta (Italian bacon) and cheese on toast-Steve Lister.
Pates (pastes) of various meats, chicken, liver, fish etc., on a hot, buttered toast.
Pizza toppings are another of our family favourites. Place one or more of any of these on a toast; slices of tomatoes/tomato puree, onions, chopped chillies, pieces of cold meat/fish-anchovies, sliced mushrooms, green pepper etc. Top with cheese of choice and grill. Serve piping hot.
Sausage, mushroom and tomatoes; drizzle a little olive oil on slices of any good bread and grill until toasted. Top with pre-cooked and sliced sausages, sliced mushrooms and sliced tomatoes. Sprinkle salt and pepper.
Sausages: Any favourite sausages, cooked, sliced, placed on a fresh toast, topped with cheese and grilled. Serve with tomato ketchup.
Spam slices on toast. SPAM is a brand of salty, processed, canned pork and ham, made popular from1950s onwards. It is still popular in UK.
Seafood
Mackerel Salad on toast.
Salmon (fish) & cream cheese; tinned or precooked salmon, mixed with a little cream cheese, lemon juice and salt and pepper and spread on a fresh, buttered toast.
Salmon or Tuna fish (cooked or tinned), mixed with chopped red onions, grated cheese freshly ground pepper, placed on toast and grilled for a couple of minutes.
Sardines: Tinned sardines in tomato sauce, placed on a hot toast, along with chopped red onions.
Smoked Mackerel (fish), flaked, mixed with a little mustard sauce, mayonnaise and freshly ground black pepper.
Smoked salmon or trout and cream chees, mixed and spread on toast.
Tinned fish like Pilchards, anchovies and other, on freshly toasted, buttered bread.
Tuna (fish) and avocado: Avocado flesh broken up, mixed with flaked tinned tuna, a little salt and pepper, any good mayonnaise and lemon juice to bind it.
Sweet toppings ;
Brown sugar and a little ground cinnamon sprinkled on a hot buttered toast. It can be grilled for sugar to melt.
Brown sugar sprinkled on a hot buttered toast, then grilled until it bubbles and it is caramelised.
Butter and honey/jam/marmalade on freshly made, hot toast, delicious!
Chocolate spread on its own or with peanut butter, on a freshly made, hot, buttered toast.
Condensed milk, thickly spread on a hot toast
Cream cheese and grated rind of fresh orange, with a dash of sugar
Cream cheese and Marmalade
Cream cheese and slices of fresh strawberry, with a sprinkle of fine sugar.
Cream cheese and Strawberry jam mixed together.
Malai (thick skin on boiled full cream milk, can be replaced with clotted cream)and sugar (Demerara or any other brown sugars) was my favourite as a kid...Shalini Mahajan.
Peanut butter and Marmalade on a hot, buttered toast. You can use other jams in place of marmalade.
Yoghurt: any thick, fruit yoghurt on fresh toast.
Vegetarian
Baked beans (Heinz or similar) in tomato sauce on toast (very popular in UK).
Chips (potato fingers or French fries) on a hot buttered toast, with a sprinkle of salt and vinegar.

Garlic butter on thick slices of toast, grilled again until it bubbles.
Green Chutney and a sprinkling of Bhujia on a fresh, buttered toast; Shalini Mahajan
Humus and Tomato Ketchup.
Marmite on a hot buttered toast.
Mushrooms cooked in olive oil, with sliced onion, garlic, salt and pepper, and then served on a buttered toast.

Mushrooms; tinned creamed mushrooms on a buttered toast, with a little freshly ground pepper added.

Olive Oil, salt and pepper on a thick toast of freshly made bread.
Peanut butter and Marmalade; place a thick layer of peanut butter on toast and top it with a thin layer of jam or marmalade. It is lovely with a glass of cold milk, one of my favourites!
Pizza toppings are another of our family favourites. Place one or more of any of these on a toast; slices of tomatoes/tomato puree, onions, chopped chillies, sliced mushrooms, green pepper etc. Top with cheese and grill.
Roasted vegetables in olive oil; roasted pepper/tomatoes/courgettes/aubergines on a hot toast, with salt and pepper and a dash of vinegar. If you do not have an oven, cook them together in a wok.
Salad & cheese; sliced cucumbers, sliced tomatoes, shredded red or green cabbage, grated carrots, chopped olives etc. on toast, topped with mozzarella or other cheese and grilled.
Spaghetti in tomato sauce (Heinz or similar) on toast is very popular with children in UK.
Tomato and basil chopped and placed on a hot, buttered toast, with salt and pepper on top and then grilled lightly.
Tomato ketchup, a sprinkling of chopped green cilantro/coriander leaves and Bikaneri Bhujia (an Indian snack); Shalini Mahajan
