Sausage rolls are one of the staples of an English picnic or buffet. They are quite easy to make. These days, most people use ready made puff pastry, it saves a lot of time and effort.
Makes 10-12, more if made smaller.
Ingredients
200 gm. (8 oz.) sausage meat or skinless sausages
200 gm. (8 oz.) Puff Pastry, ready made is very good and convenient to use
1/2 beaten egg or some milk
Instructions
Roll out the pastry to a long strip, approximately 10 cm. or 4 inch wide.
Roll the sausage meat out to the same length.
Roll up one side of the pastry, overlapping the sausage meat.
Damp along the top of the folded edge and fold over the other side of the pastry, overlapping the first side. Press gently to seal.
Cut into desired lengths and place them on a baking tray, with seal facing down.
Brush each sausage with beaten egg or milk and bake at 230˚C or 450˚F or gas mark 8 for 20 minutes. It takes less time in a fan oven.
Serve hot, with Tomato Ketchup or Chilli Sauce or a Chutney. They can also be served cold.
Notes
You can add chopped green chillies, chopped onions, coriander laves and a little black pepper to the sausage meat.
You can sprinkle a cheese of choice on top of the meat.
You can use a variety of sausages as filling, like pepperoni sausages.
To make Vegetable Sausage Rolls, you can use any filling of choice, like a Samosa filling.
