Smoked Fish Mash From Bihar (Chokha)

This is a simple dish that can be served as a starter or part of a buffet. It can also be used as a sandwich filling.

Serves 2

Ingredients

  • 1 smoked mackerel or other smoked fish fillet. Peppered one is better. Otherwise you can add coarsely ground black pepper.

  • 1/2 red onion, peeled and finely chopped

  • 2 small or 1 large clove of garlic, peeled and finely shredded

  • 1 green chilli, finely chopped

  • 1 tbsp. chopped coriander leaves.

  • Juice of 1/2 lemon/lime

Instructions

  1. Place mackerel, skin side up, green chillies and garlic on a tray. Garlic and chillies will cook in the oil released from the fish.

  2. Heat in a microwave for 1 minute or grill for 3-4 minutes.

  3. Remove skin off the mackerel and shred the flesh.

  4. Mix in a bowl with all ingredients.

  5. Serving suggestion:

  6. Serve garnished with slices of lime/lemon, with fresh bread or pitta bread slices.

  7. You can also serve it filled in heated and split pitta bread, along with other chopped salad ingredients like sliced cucumber, tomatoes and shredded lettuce.

  8. You can add it to pasta stir-fry, along with chopped red/green/yellow pepper, mushrooms etc.

  9. You can use it as a filling for jacket potatoes.
