Spicy Mackerel Fillets, Grilled

It is an easy dish to prepare. It can be served with salad or pulao rice or a selection of vegetables. Mackerel is an oily fish and good for your heart.

Serves 4

Ingredients

  • 1 mackerel fillet per person

  • First marinade (the quantities here are for 4 fillets):

  • 1/2 of a large lemon or 2 tbsp. lemon juice, freshly squeezed

  • Salt to taste (roughly 1/2 tsp.)

  • Second marinade:

  • 2 tbsp. good quality vinegar

  • 2 tbsp. thick yoghurt (optional)

  • 2 tbsp. olive oil

  • 1 tsp. cumin powder (dry roasted one is better)

  • 1 tsp. Garam Masala

  • 1 tsp. carom (ajwain) seeds or fennel (sonf) seeds

  • 1/2 tsp. chilli powder

  • 1-2 cloves of garlic, finely grated

  • Garnish:

  • 1/2 lemon, sliced

Instructions

  1. Ask your fishmonger to fillet the fish for you. wash and pat-dry it.

  2. Sprinkle salt and then dribble lemon juice all over the fillets. Leave aside for an hour or so.

  3. Meanwhile, mix all ingredients for the second marinade. Keep aside.

  4. After one hour in first marinade, coat the fish fillets well with the second marinade. Keep aside until just before you are ready to serve.

  5. Grill under a preheated grill, for 5-7 minutes, until fish is well cooked and the surface looks crisp and slightly flaky in places.

  6. Serve immediately with slices of fresh lemon
