Green peppers are also known as Bell-peppers or capsicum in different parts of the world and as Shimla Mirch in India. This is and easy dish and the recipe comes from my sister in-law in Delhi - Mamta. Serves four.

Ingredients

  • 250 gm. green peppers or Shimla mirch

  • 2 1/2 -3 tsp. besan or gram flour

  • 3-4 tbsp. mustard or olive oil

  • 1/2 tsp. fenugreek or cumin or mustard seeds or Panch Pooran

  • 1/2 tsp. turmeric or haldi powder

  • 1/2 tsp. or to taste chilli powder

  • Salt to taste

  • 1/2 lemon/lime

  • 1 tsp. sugar

Instructions

  1. Wash and cut green peppers into 2 inch squares, discarding seeds and white fleshy bits.

  2. Heat oil in a karahi or wok.

  3. Add fenugreek seeds/methi dana. Wait until it changes colour to light brown. Do not allow it to burn because it turns bitter.

  4. Add green peppers, turmeric and chilli powder. Stir well and cook covered on low heat until half cooked.

  5. Sprinkle besan and stir it in well, see picture 5.

  6. Add salt and mix.

  7. Cover and cook until fully cooked, stirring from time to time.

  8. Squeeze lemon juice in a cup, add sugar and mix well. Add this to the vegetable.

  9. Serve hot with Chapatti and dal of your choice.

Notes

  • You can make this dish with finger chillies too. It will be a little hotter than the one with Shimla Mirch, but still delicious.
