Making a custard at home is easy. It tastes infinitely better than the one made from instant mixes or custard powder.

Custard can be served with many sweets, and used to make some too, like a bread and butter pudding.

Serves 6

Ingredients

  • 4 medium egg yolks
  • 2 tbsp. sugar (normal sugar), adjust to taste
  • 1 tbsp. corn flour
  • 1 Vanilla pod or few drops of vanilla extract
  • 1 pint or 500 ml milk

Instructions

  1. Place the egg yolks, sugar and corn flour directly into a cooking pan and beat together.
  2. Place milk in a separate pan.
  3. Scrape out the fresh of vanilla pod and add to the milk, mix in well.
  4. Heat the milk to boiling and take off the heat.
  5. Remove the vanilla pod/seeds.
  6. Now add this hot milk to the first bowl with egg yolk, sugar, cornflour mix, a ladle at a time, gently beating it in.
  7. Return the mix to a pan and bring to boil, stirring all the time to stop it from catching at the bottom.
  8. Once thickened, take off the heat.
  9. Serve hot or chilled.
