Almond Milk Shake With Saffron

Saffron has been used in Indian Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. Taken in hot milk, it is said to be good for common cold and cough. Chilled, it makes a delicious, relaxing drink. Saffron is said to be good for reducing acne (pimples or zits), as an anti-inflammatory agent, in helping with renal/urinary problems, as an anti-diabetic and aphrodisiac & cardiac and nervous tonic. Of course, none of these have had any controlled studies carried out, so can not be guaranteed. It tastes delicious! Makes 1 glass

Ingredients

  • 1 glass (250 ml.) milk. I use semi-skimmed milk
  • 1 tbsp. honey or sugar
  • A few (a pinch of) saffron threads
  • 10 almonds

Instructions

  1. Soak almonds overnight. If there is no time to soak, place in a bowl of water and microwave on full for 2-3 minutes. Cool, wash and peel
  2. Place milk, saffron, honey and almonds. Blend for a good couple of minutes, because almonds take a while to grind fully, a little longer than you think.
  3. Adjust the sweetness.
  4. Garnish with a few saffron strands.
  5. Serve chilled straight away.
  6. It is considered to be more beneficial when served warm, but I prefer it cold, as a milk shake.
