I know this is off topic, but after watching footage of the London riots I hope that all of you from that neck of the woods are okay.
Sid
no bother around here, but the local police are used to riots between rival football supporters (they made two films about it!), a few hundred looters would be no problem.
It is such mindless violence, makes you want to weep! Where are the parents of these youngsters, unless they are with them themselves!
Our younger daughter lives in south London, it is worrying.
no point in blaming the parents, blame society in general. In a recession, the divide between haves and have-nots gets wider, and resentment is the fuel to discontentment. If you want to blame anyone, blame the fatcat bankers and politicians who shape society, and capitalism for all the disquiet.
Well, the some poor families living in same areas, deprived in the same way, do bring up perfectly normal children. This time, very young children are involved. Why are they out in the streets that late in the evening? I think a lot of it has to do with parenting skills too, or rather lack of them, or even loss of any parents at all in some cases! It is a very complex issue, dependent on so many things, the violence in the whole world, it's constant repetition on every news channel and so on. It has somehow lost its horror. But we have to find an answer to this.
I agree, corrupt politicians and corrupt senior people of our industry do lose the right to be critical, take action, because they themselves do not set good example. We have to find a solution to these problems of youth violence. Can you imagine this sort of thing happening during Olympics??
The problem is that a lot of people have lost the knack of feeling shame!
It is such a shame that all this is happening in UK, to me it seemed that all this was going on in Mumbai. Whatever the cause of this --the police should have been a bit strict in their approach using rubber bullets with prompt response.
This is such mindless violence, mind boggles! I heard one girl on TV saying, "it is good, in't it"? She seemed to be imp0lying that anyone who is 'rich', is fair game, no matter how hard they had worked to get rich!!
What kind of kids are we bringing up? Where are their parents, just opting out! Or is it a few 'bad', mindless adult thugs who are directing/encouraging this kind of behaviour in our kids? More worryingly, what is the answer? How can we turn this around? I know it is a small number of people out of the whole population, but this small number is taking 'pride' in their destructive work.
Absolutely agree about the "lack of shame." If people are alienated from their locality, not even knowing their neighbours, with an enforced anonomity they won't care what others think.
In Whitechapel the thugs were chased out by residents to protect the mosque and local shops and restaurants, knowing those businesses are locally owned and run and provide their best chance of employment.
One does wonder about the policing priorities - all the time the police were glued outside a 'Currys superstore' down the road. What about the small shops and restaurants whose businesses could well go under if looted unlike JD Sports, Nandos and Currys?
