Hi Mamta,

I used to write to you from Sydney every now and then and at the moment I am living in Chennai. I would like to make yoghurt at home and just wanted to ask you about terracotta pots. I really like the presentation of yoghurt in those pots but don't know if it is practical to actually make the yoghurt in those pots. What do you think? Do the pots have to be 'treated' in any way before use do you know?

Looking forward to your reply.

Regards,

Shalini

Hello Shalini

If they are terracotta pots that are glazed on the inside, they are fine. I am sure that unglazed will be fine too, but not 100% sure. When I was very young and used to live in Bihar, I remember that they used to make yoghurt in ordinary terracotta pots. Also, they used to sell it in little pots called 'shakora' on the railway station. So, it must be possible to do this. I suggest you try it out, what have you got to loose. It might be actually quite a thick yoghurt, as terracotta will absorb water. If it gets too 'tight', you can always soak the pot in water before making yoghurt in it, like they do on Diwali, so the diyas/divas do not absorb too much oil.
