Why did I never think of doing this? We have lots of savoury cake here in France.

For the first time ever, I used a recipe from Saturday Kitchen, having seen Rachel Koo do this on last week's programme.

I got my son, the baker in the family, to do this, with goat's cheese, pistachios and prunes. He doesn't like it, but we do! Fantastic! Devoured within the space of a week. Great for snacking.

Sliced black olives would work in there, and dried figs from next year's harvest.

Sounds very interesting, cheese, pistachio and prunes! So how did your son make it?

Gujarati Indians make a savoury cake of a sort called Handvo

Have you ever heard of it? I suppose Dhoklas (there are other recipes on this site) are also steamed savoury cakes, again a Gujarati dish.

Hi Phil

So you have discovered "Les Cake Sal?s" glad you liked it, they are yummy.

A few of the many that I have made:

Cake aux oignons nouveaux et aux lardons (spring onions and bacon pieces)

Cake au jambon et aux champignons de Paris (ham and mushrooms)

Cake aux gambas et aux tomates confites (Shrimp and dried tomatoes)

I find them more'ish so simple to make, just think of a couple of things that go together and make a cake, olives go well with numerous things.

Bonne chance

Thanks, both!

I'll investigate all that.

Version 2 of my son's 'cake' with goat's cheese, pistachios and prunes went down really well: my daughter loved it, and my wife is off to work in Toulouse with some this week.

I had to slices this evening when I got back from work: fab!

Hi Mamta and All

try this:

Ingredients

200 g plain flour

4 eggs

8 tablespoons milk

75 g butter, melted

150 g of grated cheese

200 g of ham

1tsp baking powder

Method

Put the flour in a bowl incorporate one after another: baking powder, eggs, milk, melted butter, cheese.

Mix and add the ham cut into small pieces.

Pour into cake pan and bake one hour, oven thermostat 6 (180 ?C)

Serve hot with a green salad.

Serves 4-6

you could use cooked bacon cut up cubed instead of ham and a few onions or salmon and prawn, or salmon, chives and dill, or salmon, crab and chives, or olives, cheese and herbs, the list is endless.

Have fun with your favourite combo's

All the best

You can use "Anything you like" such as carrots, green beans and peas, the french tend to add cheese to a lot of them (grated or small cubes)or try Aubergine and feta cheese or cucumber, mint and feta, or Roquefort cheese and pears, or courgettes and red peppers, I'm sure chillies could be used, not used them myself but you've got me thinking now (I grow a bright red mild'ish chilli) and coriander maybe, don't quote me but I doubt if any would be a total failure and what suits you, might not suit everyone, I would think there are almost as many recipes for Cake Sal? as there are for Curry :)

Give it a go

All the best

Yes, there are many possible ingredients for French savoury cake, so it's fine for veggies.

I'm now about to get my boy onto baking breads, especially Indian breads. First stop: chapati, then naan (with kalonji), and all those other delicious Indian breads.

I have a block about anything involving flour and water, but not my boy, thankfully!

Perhaps we'll even get back to samosas, which I've always made a mess of!

Thanks Curryman, I will give it a try, perhaps over the week-end. Only problem is I am on a diet still and though eating normally on 5 days, don't want to gain agian, have lost 7 kg. so far (was 8 kg, put on a bit last week!). Recipe printed out.

Phil, enjoy bread making with your son. Also try Poori (and eventually Kachauri), both very nice though a bit rich. Apart from dal, a Kachuri can be stuffed with anything like mashed potato, grated vegetables and even meat, though I have not made the meat one myself!
