We went for a very nice meal at the National Sport's Club of India in Delhi last night. By a strange co-incidence, this is the place where we got married in 1969! I don't remember the food from that occasion, but it was good last night, specially their Kulfi ice-cream. Their stuffed potatoes were almost as good as my mum's, http://www.mamtaskitchen.com/recipe_display.php?id=10285 .
Off to my mum's place this afternoon, after the 'festival of colour' is over. I don't have do do any house-work, including cooking, for the next 2 weeks, BLISS!
Love to all
Mamta
Apart from the kulfi and the stuffed potatoes, what else did you have, Mamta?
I'm green with envy!
Phil
sounds like your going to be a bit pampered while your there... have a great time...
Hello Phill and Steve
We had Mixed Vegetable Pakoras with green chutney and Dum aloo for starters (Roast Potatoes, halved, filled with paneer cheese filling and grilled just a bit) and a fresh lemonade to drink. Everyone else was vegetarian and non-alcohol drinker, so we did the same, although the place is known for nice Kebabs etc. too. No one is eating chiken or eggs in India at present!
For main course, we had a Stuffed potato curry, dak makhani (butter dal), Mixed vegetable curry, munchurian vegetable stir-fry, Mixed salad rita, fresh Nans, Missi roties, some pickles and roasted/grilled popodoms. For dessert, we had Kulfi and Tutti Fruity Ice-cream, both very nice. In case you are wondering that we pigged ourselves on desserts, we actually had 1/2 of both ;-)!
I am now in a place called Roorkee, a bit norh of Delhi.
Mamta
What a feast!
Green chutney: is that just made from an assortment of green vegetables?
Do you mean 'Manchurian'? Is that dish from outside of India?
I'm deeply envious!

Green chutney is gorgeous - one of my favourite things. It's not only good with Indian dishes (like kebabs, samosas, pakoras, etc.) but also rather good in cheese sandwiches and as a sauce for salmon.
Here's the recipe:

I seldom have a green mango to hand and always make it with sharp, crispy, green apples.
Yes, I did mean 'Manchurian', sorry! No, it is not from outside India. I think it is a fusion of Indian and Chinese cuisine and it is very, very popular in Indian restaurants. Look up for the reipes for 'chicken Munchurian' or 'vegetarian munchurian'. It is usually chicken cooked in a soya and other sauces, with green peppers and onions and it is quite hot when served in Indian restaurants. It is almost always served with fine noodles stir-fried with mixed vegetables. I have a feeling that it was actually invented in India, not Munchuria, but can't remember the exact story.
Got to go, too many mosquitoes making a meal of my feet under this computer table!!
Goodnight all!
Mamta
Mamta and Kavita,
Thanks for both of those. I might have a go at the chutney.
I had no idea that a fusion between Indian and Chinese food existed, but I suppose it's in the nature of culinary traditions that fusions occur.
Since Indian and Chinese food is what we mostly cook, this is interesting for us.
Phil
Since many Chinese have lived in India for many generations, It was bound to happen. We have many Chinese restaurants here in India. Many dishes are popular, like corn-soup, chow-meins, noodles of various sorts cooked in many styles and a whole host of usual Chinese dishes. They are a bit different, to suit he Indian taste.
Went out to a countryside coffee place with my nephew this afternoon. Apart from an excellent cup of coffee, we had some lovely mixed vegetable fritters http://www.mamtaskitchen.com/recipe_display.php?id=12803. One thing new I learnt, they sprinkle some chat masala on top, just before serving with green mango/apple chutney http://www.mamtaskitchen.com/recipe_display.php?id=10086. It was yummy!
I have just had some lovely stuffed, sweet patties/Gunjia http://www.mamtaskitchen.com/recipe_display.php?id=10058 with a nice cup of lemon tea. I am stuffed and dinner is still to come!!
Mamta
Hi Mamta,
I just returned from India couple of weeks ago, not only Delhi but it seems the whole of India is boiling under heat wave with no respite of rains. I was roasted (winter is much better option). As you said nobody's eating chicken and eggs there? Is the "flu" back? but I had plenty of both of em. there seem to be no warning. I had chicken manchurian as well from a takeaway restaurant..not bad, good with rice.
Well then, enjoy yourself in Rishikesh...see ya.
You are Mad to go to India in May, perhaps the hottest time of the year Rajneesh!!!
I am not at Rishikesh, I am in Miami and I am nearly due back. My husband is holding the fort for the time being!
I'm going to make your traditional kulfi ice cream recipe tomorrow, Mamta - I have already put the ice cream bowl for the churner in the freezer :-) Kulfi is one of my favourite ice creams!
