Do you use actual measuring spoons to measure spices or just normal household spoons? I am wondering because if using normal spoons, I am not sure, for example, how much is say '1 teaspoon of chilli powder'... I imagine 1 heaped teaspoon would be make a significant difference compared to 1 level teaspoon!

Thanks in advance.

Hello Bec

For the sake of a few pounds I have bought a set of measuring spoons. There is a lot of useful information on Mamta's measuring page: http://www.mamtaskitchen.com/tip_display.php?tip_id=3

Once I bought the spoons I discovered there was a massive difference in the capacity of my different spoons (looks can be quite deceptive!) If you have a teaspoon you know is 5ml, a tablespoon of 15ml and a cup of 250ml fine (or take them to a friends to be measured!)

The measuring spoons are useful if you are going to be baking but in a making a curry make sure you use at least the same teaspoon throughout the recipe.

I am beginning to sound like that column in Private Eye "Me and my spoons" LOL!
