Hello Mamta,

This is my first post, great site, keep it up.

I want to make your Mango Chutney recipe but I live in Spain on Costa Del Sol and it is impossible to get malt vinegar here in a large size unless you buy Sar.... in a 250ml bottle at 2.50 euros for it.

Can I use white wine vinegar or red wine vinegar to make the chutney ?

Mangoes here are very cheap 1kg for 0.98 eurocents.

I object to buying Shar..... chutney at 3.50 euros for 350grms.

I used to make mango chutney when I lived in London, (a Gary Rhodes recipe). It is very good.

I can get all the other ingredients apart from the malt vinegar.

Can you advise me please if it will work.

Hello Hirta

I am glad you like our site, thank you for saying it and welcome to the site :-).

Yes, you can make mango chutney with any reasonable type of vinegar. My dad, whose recipe it is on this site mango chutney, used to make his own vinegar from sugar cane juice. He was a sugar chemist in India. I am sure red/white wine vinegar will be fine.

Hope your chutney turns out well, whichever recipe you make it with.

"used to make his own vinegar from sugar cane juice" I know I feel I've been cheating if I use shop bought sauces or spice mixes, but thats going a little far even for me !.. lol

ps I (thought I?)knew vinegar was made from wine/grapes and malt never actually gave it anymore thought than that !

Steve,

Actually, not going so far as all that! My grandfather worked in the sugar cane industry - infact he developed processes that are still in use today. (Proud granddaughter alert). So he knew sugar cane and sugar cane juice intimately and presumably had easy access to it as well!

Yes, he did have easy and continous access to sugar cane and juice. We had it regularly, Rice pudding cooked in sugar cane juice was devine, completely different taste. Many other things were made in it, like dough for sweet parathas.

He won a presidential medal for his invention Kavey is talkig about, may be she will have it from me one day ;-)!
