I've inherited a batch of frozen Elderberries and wondered if they were used in Indian recipes or medicine. (Not North American Indian or in England as they is plenty of information on the internet.

Looked on Wiki and there are species of Elder that grow in Asia, though it's not hugely clear on whether any grow in India. I'd guess so... perhaps Black Elder or Chinese Elder have spread there?
It says, of Black Elder, Sambucus nigra that this is the species most often used medicinally.
There's some info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sambucus_nigra
I don't know how this Elderberry relates to our native one in Britain though.
Not sure if this grows in the plains of India. They may have it in the hills, but I had not heard of it, until I cam to England.
Just a thought, you could make a pickle with them, you know the general one with vinegar, salt and spices. I don't even know what they taste like, so not sure if this will work LOL!
Thanks Manta, great idea.
Found an interesting recipe on the River Cottage web site so I'll that a go
go.

Thanks, Winton!
Now I know what to do with the elderberries that grow on the roadside in front of the house!
Back in Scotland in the early 80's, we did elderberry wine, but it was rough, and very alcoholic, which went down with my Scottish father-in-law!
