i need to make dahi vada for this weekend party. there are 20 people. i am guessing 2 vadas for each person. so could any one give me the idea that how much dal i need to soak?

It depends how many other things you are making and fond of dahi vadas your friends are. Many people wil eat 2-3 and some won't touch them at all.
If you have a big menu, serve roughly 1 1/2 times the number of people that are coming. I always make extra, because they freeze well before the 'soaking in warm water' stage. They last well for a few days in the fridge.
Unsoaked ones can be frozen and used for another party. So, for 20 people, double the quantity that I have given, but soak only 28-30. Leave the rest aside. These can be soaked in hot water quickly, if you need more or frozen if not needed.
