I bought a tin of this on a whim, and now have no idea what to do with it! I have not been able to find recipes that I understand. It seems to be a large quantity to open and have go off in a short time. I have found a recipe for GULABI PHIRNI and I wondered about making some form of BARFI but after that I am stumped and would still have most of the tin left!

Any suggestions would be most welcome!

Mamta, whilst I cannot sleep, I have been reading old threads, and I notice in one that your family lives near Dehradun. This is where my Dad was brought up. His family ran a small hotel called Parade View, it was next to the Dehradun Club! Small world!

How interesting Ann. I go to a place called Roorkee near Dehradun. This is a army and university town established by British, around a Upeer ganges Canal built by British to improve irrigation in Uttar Pradesh (UP state of northern India. It is still maintained in perfect condition by Indian irrigation dept. Dehradun has now become a very busy city, compared to the 'summer place' for british people of the Raj years. My youngest niece went to college and then university there.

It is still in a beautiful part of India, why don't you visit it sometimes, with your dad's notes and see what you can find? I couldn't find the hotel you mentioned, perhaps rebuilt and changed names by now! This is one adress I found; DEHRADUN CLUB LTD.

15, New Survey Road, Dehradun-248001

0135-657353, 655747, 656680

I go to roorkee twice a year, next trip plnned for october:-)!

If you type Gulkand in 'google.in', you will learn a lot about it. Most people eat it as it is, just a spoon ful with milk. We used to have it with milk. It is made from clean petals of wild rose and sugar. Search on Indian google, you will learn a lot.

It is nice chatting to you about old India!

Hello Mamta,

I believe the "Hotel" is still there. It is now near derelict and home to about a dozen very poor families. I would still like to go and visit my Dad's old "stomping grounds". I am currently researching my family papers, so Roorkee, Dalhousie, Meerut, Lucknow, Lahore, Ghora Gali, Missoorie, Walnut Grove and Calcutta all have special meanings for me. Probably a few more names by the time I am finished! In one of the hotels, there was a mango tree, Dad still drools when he talks about it!!!! For now, I have to make do with the food!
