I would like to find baking powder and all purpose flour for baking.
Any advice on how I can go about finding such items and how I can ask for them? Asking for flour has so far not been very successful unfortunately - possibly an accent problem that is causing trouble in the communication.
Does anyone know of a specific chain of grocer maybe that would stock such things? Have tried some of the bigger ones close to us as well as an importer of international goods without luck.
Hello
Can't help you with 'where to buy all purpose baking flour', but you can make your own; http://www.mamtaskitchen.com/recipe_display.php?id=13031 . Baking powder is easily available in India at most half decent supermarkets. Incindentally, it is called Self-raising flour in UK, so may be they call it self-raising too.

I think you would be much better off with plain flour and adding baking powder yourself. The shelf life of baking powder isn't long in hot climates. A good tip when using baking powder is to use a tea strainer to sift the baking powder. Its not to sift the lumps out (there shouldn't be any) but if you are called away from the kitchen, on your return, you can tell if you added the baking powder by looking at the tea strainer. (Old Irish tip)
Lapis, I was waiting for some sort of helping to mix or chemical reaction by letting more of the powder come into contact with the air, or similar lines... LOL

I remember years ago that chefs would sprinkle a small amount of flour onto the handle of frying pans to let other people know that the pan was red hot.
I know that sounds stupid, but it's amazing the amount of people who burn on hot pans because they just pick them up thinking they are cool enough to handle... It's one of those things that when you've done it once you're careful in the future ? especially when you have a huge blister going up the side of your hand.
Andrew your not far wrong, when I bought a new roasting tray with handles on the side... you use it on the top of the oven and the handles are ok, put it the oven and they are hot. however when you take it out to check/baste etc you forget again and see the handles as handles... but only once !
