What is the name of the chickpea curry which is very dark in colour and has a slight burnt flavour to it?

Chickpea Masala in a Spicy Sauce - 1 or

Chickpea Masala in a Spicy Sauce - 2, both of which are dark in colour. As they have no turmeric, they look brown...ish?

It looks dark...ish. I buy the ready made one, as I have seen all professional caterers and chefs use it. I use it along with the usual spices, to 'tart' it up a bit.

I should actually try to get a recipe from someone, shouldn't I? But everyone I know, here and in India, buys the Chana masala (not chick pea curry masala). I use something like this; http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mangal-Chana-Masala-100g/dp/B003U6K6G4

I did a quick search on the net and there are a few recipes for it, but I don't know how authentic they are.

I guess too many tea bags made it darker, which is a norm in Punjabi/Amritsari choley.
