Anyone tried growing cumin from cumin seeds that you buy like you can with coriander seeds? If possible I might give it a go in summer.

Cheers

Why not? Cumin plants are very similar to fennel plants, which my elder sister used to grow in Lucknow, in India. Fennel plants are very similar to cumin. I don't know anyone personally who has grown cumin though. It is worth a try. Let us know how you get on.

in fact, many seeds we use in Indian (and other) cuisines are from the same botanical family Apiaceae (or Umbelliferae). This includes the well known herbs/spices such as coriander, cumin, celery, parsley, fennel, dill, ajwain, and anise (not star anise!) together with hing (asafoetida) lovage and radhuni (wild celery). All plants are from the more temperate climatic zones, and would all grow well in temperatures lower than in most of India, but with higher rainfall.

Note, some varieties have been developed for special regions, or/and final product, meaning, for example, coriander can be chosen for leaf or seed production.
