Firstly make sure that it is organic and virgin c oil.

Coconut oil is not only good for skin and hair (when applied externally)but also for weight loss, diabetes, anti-carcinogenic,kidneys, heart etc. One of its componets Lauric acid is a boon for health. It can be used as cooking oil.

Coconut oil is high in saturated fat. By modern medical standards, this means it's very unhealthy, which is probably where your bf is coming from.

I believe coconut oil is in fact one of the best oils about. If you research, while it is saturated fat, it's very different from animal fat. As a result the body metabolises it differently.

Also, do remember while non-saturated (except trans-fats) are supposed to be better for you, heating them to high temperatures changes this and makes them very bad for you, so using them isn't always better for you.

I thought it was now generally agreed that Virgin Coconut Oil (made from fresh coconuts) is actually very good for your health. Some health food shops even sell coconut oil capsules! It makes for a very good cooking oil.

It is not to be confused with the refined 'copra' coconut oil made from dried coconuts which is probably better used as a fuel rather than a food.
