Our old oven went kerput and we bought a new one.. The choice was limited in our budget and size etc, but we ended up with a large range type Ceramic Hob. Looks great, got 2 large ovens and a seperate grill, 5 rings and a warmer plate.

Very happy and then started to read through all the instructions which lead to searching all over the internet !

The reason -

Most of our current pans can't be used on it ! - My all time favourite pans the Prestige pressure cooker pans are aluminium so can't be used (some pans in varying shops are marked as ok for ceramic even though they are aluminium !)

It appears the aluminium reacts with the ceramic of the hob and causes pitting that can build up and reduce the affectiveness of the hob and make it look bad.

More searching shows you can't use copper bottom pans for the very same reason (I used one of mine just once and its left some marks that I've just about managed to scrub out !)

Cast Iron is advised against due to weight and scratching,

anodised aluminium seems to be ok on some but ours says no..

in fact ours says we can use GLASS or STAINLESS STEEL only !

So spent 2 days looking at pan sets that are ok to use, and none of the sets are any use to us. Most come with something like a 14cm milk/sauce pan, 16cm, 18m, 20cm and a 24cm frying pan...

Our current frying pan is 32cm, most of the weekend cooking is done in at least 2 pressure cooker pans, sometime using a large stockpot as well... (cooking for 10-20 people most weekends).. so the "normal" sized pans don't hold anywhere near enough.

So we have a steamer set thats stainless steel and 1 large stockpot that is the same. We've just been and bought a new frying pan (stainless with non-stick inside, not on the base), 1 more stockpot and a large sauce pan (20cm)... so thats another ?75 we hadn't planned for.. I'm sure we will have to buy a few more as we get going ...

That is such a disaster! I take it you can't now change it?

I don't know much about hobs, but would using a Hob Grate, like the ones on a gas cooker, on top of the electric plate help, something like this;

My nephew's wife used to use her normal pots and pans on her electric glass hob, when she was living in Switzerland. It was a rented house and she didn't even know that she shouldn't. It never caused her any problems! Cast iron might cause scratches, but I can't see anything else causing any bother.

The pans have to be square in profile and the correct size for the "ring" otherwise it causes it to keep overheating and shutting down. So putting it on a stand wouldn't work (its something I'd thought about, some sort of metal discs to go under the pan etc, but decided it would be more trouble than its worth)

At first glance you might not notice the damage being done, you probably just think its getting older and a little worn out etc, but it shouldn't change over time if used right.

I only noticed this morning when the sun was shinning across the hob that it had the little bits on it (even though it had been cleaned) Thats what prompted the new pans at once. That was only after using my (very good and expensive) copper bottomed pan just once !

Hi Steve,

just think you are going to have consider it all as a long term investment. just think of all the potential power savings you will make with the speedy heating up and better control. Plus you should have the smartest looking hobs and matching equipment in town!
