Hi I need some suggestions on storing seeds & spices. At the moment the powders are in their tin containers as bought in the shops at the time, but as for the seeds, some I have put in glass jars and the rest are still in there plastic packets. Also, how to store lentils, at the moment they are in plastic containers.

Thanks for any suggestions

Hello Maxine

This is for UK:

Lentils are fine in plastic containers and will keep for many months, even a year.

Spices will also be fine in their metal containers, but longer you have them, less flavoursome they will be. If you don?t use them often enough, keep them in a fridge or freezer.

Seeds are fine in glass jars. If I buy large packs, I keep some out in a jar and the rest in its original bag, sealed with a rubber band, in the freezer.

This applies to most things - biscuits etc. As an alternative to Mamta's method.

'Put them in an AIRTIGHT container' it says. Great - a couple of biscuits or a tsp of spice in box or spice jar? NO!! Keep them in a plastic bag - in their bigger container - with all the air extracted. THEN you are airtight??

Even in the freezer, all air should be excluded.

Same goes for fizzy pop ! if you have a half empty bottle squeeze as much air out of it as you can (right to the top if possible) and put the lid on - It will stay fizzy much longer as the bubbles have less space to escape into !

PS ^ don't try squeezing it if its a glass bottle ! :-)

LOL!

How do you squeeze air out of a bottle and then close the lid, without it filling again?

You will be glad to know that Kavey has now started putting pictures on the site, a few a day.
