Mamta: we've been doing lots of barbecue lunches by the pool here in the South of France. Yesterday, I did chicken with the marinade you suggest under the heading 'barbecued meats': it was great! Thanks!

I'm puzzled that the marinade doesn't look very Indian: Worcester Sauce and soy sauce are in the mix.

I had a French student of Indian origin at the university here this year; she said that her Indian mum cooks with soy sauce. That surprised me: I associate soy sauce with Chinese, not Indian, cookery.

Do the Indians use soy sauce?

Hello Phil

Traditionally, Soya sauce is not used in Indian cooking. However, people mix and match things from different cuisines these days. The Barbecued meatsrecipe you mention, is not Indian at all. It is just 'a bit of this and a bit of that' kind of recipe ;-)!

many Indian people love Chinese food, I have a friend in Mumbai who eats practically nothing else, so much so we thought he lived above a Chinese restaurant. But he cooked for himself, and called it Indo Chinese food, until I told him that was the old name for Vietnam! Now he calls it Chindian ! LOL

My first Indian cook book was published in the 1970's, and had a few Chinese recipes in it, including pork and pineapple! Mind you, there are ever McDonald's in India, although the menu is not remotely the same, Mctikka, I kid you not!

Yes, mcdonalds in India serve different food, suited to local taste. Some of the things served are;

Chicken McCurry Pan

Chicken Wrap and Curry Pans in shahi paneer and chicken tikka variations.

Maharaja Mac, with two grilled chicken patties, topped with onions, tomatoes, cheese and a spicy mayonnaise. It was originally made with lamb, but is now made with chicken.

Paneer Salsa Wrap

McAloo Tikki Burger (Aloo=potato)

Crispy Chinese; a vegetarian patty topped with a creamy Szechuan sauce and lettuce.

Pizza McPuff

Cuisines change/evolve. You will now find Soya sauce, green and red chilli sauce and a few other non-Indian ingredients in almost every modern Indian kitchen. I am also guilty of mixing ingredients from different cuisines in my 'a bit of this and a bit of that' type of recipes :-)LOL!

Thanks, both. Not sure what to make of Indian Macdonalds. I'm slightly disappointed that the French have embraced Macdo (as they call it)with such enthusiasm.

Lapis: is that cook book still in print?
