Its not something I've had a lot but once when I had them I thought they had a nice, mild almost creamy flavour but I had them again some time later and they seemed to have a rather acrid? taste !

Is this normal?..is it to do with ripeness ? type ?.. how they have been prepared?... how old they ?

or is it just me ? lol

I love Avocados and I can?t say I have ever tasted them acrid. They weren?t over ripe or gone ?off?? Under ripe-hard ones can be very slightly bitter. Taste also depends on the type. I like Hass best. The ones I buy from Indian shop, not sure of the variety, are also always good. They have to ?give? slightly when pressed.

I wouldn't have thought they were off (served in a restaurant) as the flavour wasn't that bad but had a little unpleasantness (does that word exist?) to it !

a bit like you may have 10 strawberries all sweet and tasty then one will be a bit more like eating the stalk...

I also think that the Haas variety of avocadoes are the best. They will go black if you don't put something like a little lemon juice on them. One way that I like to serve them is to dice 1-2 avocadoes along with 1-2 tomatoes. Add olive oil, a little lemon juice and salt and pepper. You can also make Mexican guacamole with avocadoes and frost a whole steamed cauliflower (steam the cauliflower the day before then let it chill all night in the fridge). Decorate with tomatoes if desired and cut this salad into wedges to serve. You can also mash up the avocadoes with Indian spices and frost the cauliflower for an Indian type of salad.

Remember an avocado as a real treat when young, not often available in rural Wiltshire, just when my Father came back from London, bought from a greengrocer stall on Waterloo Station (that is dating me!)

I think you get that luxurious 'creamy texture' best from larger avocado varieties I go for just a simple lemon vinaigrette dressing, Dad a spoon of good tomato ketchup (Dutch style) in the stone hole although for a dinner party some prawn cocktail works well.

Apparently an avocado is very high in protein for a fruit, full of vitamins and a usual baby food in South America. Just take a fork to mush it up plucked from a tree and you have the perfect baby food!

did you just say your dating the greengrocer from waterloo road?

LOL! Some misunderstanding there. I do have a close relationship with some of the stall holders in the local market, but only to the extent of them throwing a few extra free veggies in my bag!

Asky - you probably just got a piece of underipe avocado. They are as common down here as apples. The younger ones are sometimes a bit harsh.
