This is one of the many spice powders that are eaten with rice, idli, dosa and other South Indian foods.

Ingredients

1 cup chana dal (or tur/tuvar/arhar dal)
2 tsp. cumin seeds
1 1/2 tbs. cayenne/chilli powder
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. garlic powder (optional) or 1/4 tsp. asafoetida/hing powder

Instructions

1.Dry fry the chana/tuvar dal. Allow to cool.
2.Dry fry the cumin seeds. Allow to cool.
3.Dry fry the cayenne powder for about 15 seconds. Allow to cool.
4.Powder the chana dal, cumin seeds, cayenne, salt and garlic powder/asafoetida together.
5.Serve with hot rice and ghee/oil and thinly slivered onion on the side.
6.You can try making it with garlic powder. Eat this way mixed with rice, and then try with a little garlic powder sprinkled on top and see if you like it better with or without the garlic powder.
