Spicy Carrot and Apple Salad
Gajar aur Sev ka Chatpata Salad

Grated carrots are used in all kinds of salads. Here I have mixed them with grated dessert apples. If you use cooking apples, omit lemon juice, they are tart enough. Quantities of carrots and apples are approximate. Serves 4-6

3-4 carrots
2 dessert apple
Salt to taste
1 tsp roasted cumin, coarsely ground
1/2 tsp. chilli flakes or thinly sliced green chillies
Juice of 1 lemon


1.Top and tail and peel carrots.
2.Slice and core apples, no need to peel. Sprinkle a little salt on apples immediately, this will stop discolouration.
3.Grate both through same sized grater.
4.Place in a bowl, add cumin, salt, chillies and mix gently.
5.Taste and add lemon juice.
6.Adjust seasoning. Keep in a bowl with cling film or an airtight container.
7.Serve chilled.


You can add a teaspoon full of finely chopped coriander leaves, if you wish.
You can add Chat Masala in place of salt, chilli and roast cumin.
