This is a simple, refreshing raita for summer. It can be served with an Indian meal or alongside a grilled chicken/fish/meat and a selection of vegetables. Avocados are called Makhan phal in Hindi.

Serves 4-6

Ingredients

  • 1 avocado pear, skinned, stone removed and flesh chopped into small cubes

  • 1 tomato, skinned, de-seeded and chopped into small cubes

  • 1-2 green chillies, sliced thinly (adjust to taste)

  • 1/2 red onions, peeled and finely chopped

  • 1 tbsp. fresh coriander leaves, finely chopped

  • 1 1/2 - 2 cups yoghurt

  • A good sprinkle of freshly ground black pepper

  • 1 tsp. salt

  • 1/2 tsp. roast cumin, coarsely powdered (roast cumin seeds in a dry wok and grind in a mortar)

  • 1/4 tsp. chilli powder

Instructions

  1. Lightly beat yoghurt in a bowl.

  2. Add all other ingredients, except half of the chilli powder and cumin powder, and fold gently together.

  3. Place in a serving dish and sprinkle saved chilli and cumin powders.

  4. Serve chilled.

Notes

  • Avocado for the raita should be on the firm side and not soggy.
