I was making besan sev and suddenly there was a lot of froth in the oil and it spilled in huge amount all over the gas stove. I am following almost similiar recipe as yours except that I don't put any baking powder. Please suggest what could be the reason and what's the solution to this problem.

OMG, that is dangerous! I am not sure but;

...was your pan too full with oil, making the level rise too high when you put cold/wet food into it?

...did you put too much food in the oil, suddenly bringing the level too high?

...was the food too wet, that sometimes makes the things boil over?

You said there was no baking powder in it? That can cause problems some times.
